Curtain Call

David and I are currently discussing window treatments for our home - particularly the living room and dining room.

We both agree that we don't like valances and we want it to look simple and elegant. We're trying to go for a "rustic farmhouse" look, but not necessarily country (does that even make sense?). Last night we looked through books, magazines and the internet for ideas to show each what we the other was thinking.

Here's what I picked out:

This one is my favorite. I have never seen any window treatment like this before.

I liked the simple yet unexpected look of the asymmetrical tie back.

I liked the unique way the sheers were pinned.

Here are David's picks:
He thought this gave more of the rustic farmhouse feel we wanted.

He liked the airy look the sheers gave and the tabs were different.

He had an idea to put in white shutter-like blinds.

As anyone can now see, our vision for simple elegance are different. What do you all think? Any opinions or ideas?

I personally am a big fan of shutters, but they are very expensive and not really a great option of the do-it-yourselfer. The picture that you weren't sure what the window treatment is... it looks like a roman shade to me. These are much easier to install and you can get a pretty good deal on these online. Best of luck.

I really like that first curtain. Simple but unusual.

Seems like the only two options you pictures that would actually give any privacy would be the one you liked that tied at the side and the shutters. The first option is very elegant, but doesn't look very easy to use. Shutters seem most suited to your modern, elegant-farmhouse look you have going so far. They're very Pottery Barn-esqe. Of course, shutters are pretty expensive. Maybe you could do inexpensive tab-top sheers for awhile and save up for something more elaborate? Have fun! :)

Love shutters but they are spendy, plus if you do them one place in the house it looks kind of funny not to do the whole house. (at least in my book)

I love the first one but its not super user friendly with the roman shade. The first one David picked is probably more "farm house" looking but I like the "look" of your first choice better.

How's that for NO HELP!?!
